Texas Southern Wins First SWAC Championship Since 1968

Submitted by on December 11, 2010 – 6:11 PM

Birmingham, AL – Texas Southern beats Alabama State 11-6 for their first Southwestern Athletic Conference title since the late 60′s. The TSU defense held the Hornets to 72 total yards. The Tigers accomplished this feat without starting QB Arvell Nelson who was held out of today’s game.

Nelson was held out of game as questions were raised about his eligibility. Athletic Director, Charles McClelland, was sure to clarify that the university made the call and not the NCAA.

Back up QB Riko Smalls proved quite capable. Smalls passed for 86 yards, rushed for 84 and was named Offensive MVP. RB Marcus Wright showed why he was a first team All-SWAC selection as he ran for 123 yards.

Dejuan Fulghum, LB, Texas Southern

But it was the Tigers’ defense and SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, LB Dejuan Fulghum that carried the day. Fulghum added two sacks to bring his total on the year to 11. Fulghum was named Defensive MVP of the Championship.
